About the event

Since the earliest stone tools date to over 2.6 million years ago, we can assume humans have been weaving baskets for at least hundreds of thousands of years, if not longer.  Willows, also called sallows or osiers, account for over 400 species within the genus Salix, and, when appropriately managed, produced a fine material for weaving. Willows have ancient, global cross-cultural significance. Willow bark contains salicin, which has been used by humans for thousands of years to ease pain from stomach pain and headaches.

Learn to weave a strong, round basket made of willows! We'll cover identification, regenerative gathering, storage, processing, and several basic techniques required to make an heirloom basket that you will cherish for the rest of your life. $85 includes all required materials, tools, and tuition.

Space in this class is limited to 6 participants. Preregistration, along with a paid deposit, is required to reserve a spot in the class. Deposits may be fully refunded in the event of a cancellation a week or more before the class, if the space is filled. Refunds for last-minute cancellations are unfortunately not available. Please plan accordingly. Contact Rewild Maine at (207) 449-7738 or rewildmaine@gmail.com if you have any questions.

NOTE: Due to the ongoing international COVID-19 pandemic, preventative guidelines will be adhered to.  Please wear a mask or a cloth covering over your face, maintain physical distancing throughout the class, and do not attend if you are feeling unwell.
