About the event
Toys are important! Humans have been making toys for fun using organic, natural materials for hundreds of thousands of years. One such toy is the slip-bark whistle. Argue about how old it is, but there's no disagreement when it comes to how much fun it is to use these musical instruments, also known as May-whistles for the season in which they are most easily made.
Learn to make a slip-bark May-whistle, along with ring-and-stick (reminiscent of cup-and-ball,) and a few other stick-based toys. We'll also cover the basics of safe knife carving. This event is free! Bring your own knife, or don't worry: all tools and materials provided. Everyone will make a brand-new toy to take home!
Donations of $5-15 (tax-deductible!) will be always be graciously accepted. Rewild Maine is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We depend on donations from the community to offer free classes and workshops and we are grateful for your support. Scholarships are available for paid classes on an as-needed basis and nobody will ever be turned away for lack of funds. All donations are tax-deductible.
