About the event
Animal skins, when properly prepared, provide a strong material that may be used to fashion clothing, containers, cordage, and more. Humans worldwide have been using animal skins as fabric for thousands of years, if not more. Learn to process animal hides into strong leather, which can be used to make durable clothing, shoes, bags and other items that, if properly cared for, will last for several lifetimes.
We'll cover scraping, cleaning, wringing, dressing, hand- and frame-softening, and smoking. Everyone will work a hide start-to-finish. If this is your first time making leather, consider teaming up with a friend. $45 for one day or $120 suggested for three: includes all required tools, materials, tuition, and snacks. Limited to 10 students. (You will only be able to completely tan a deer hide from start to finish if you are able to attend all three days.)
Space in this class is limited. Preregistration, along with a paid deposit, is required to reserve a spot in the class. Deposits may be fully refunded in the event of a cancellation a week or more before the class, if the space is filled. Refunds for last-minute cancellations are unfortunately not available. Please plan accordingly. Contact Rewild Maine at (207) 449-7738 or rewildmaine@gmail.com if you have any questions.
