About the event
Come along and learn about the good qualities of invasive plants! Of course, many people don’t like invasive plants because they spread so much and can be harmful to native species. We can help manage these plants, and in the process, make great art!
We’ll learn how to make flutes and pan-pipes from Japanese knotweed, baskets, frisbees and sculptures from invasive bittersweet, and a few types of toys and instruments using staghorn sumac.
Day One - March 17, 9:30am-2:30pm
Morning: Gather Japanese knotweed, make Japanese knotweed flutes and pan-pipes (carving and wood-burning)
Afternoon: Staghorn sumac whistles, stick-loop toys using bittersweet hoops, (also opportunities for games to break up the action)
Day Two - March 31, 9:30am-2:30pm
Morning - Bittersweet basket making
Afternoon - Finish baskets or make frisbees (also opportunities for games to break up the action)
What to Bring: a lunch, a water bottle, and a backpack/day pack to carry your things. Remember to dress for the weather (in layers) and dress to be outdoors all day! Wear hiking boots or sneakers with good traction.
