About the event
Learn to process animal hides into strong leather, which can be used to make durable clothing, shoes, bags and other items that, if properly cared for, will last for several lifetimes. This is an ancient human skill that has been practiced for hundreds of thousands of years around the world. We'll be working on a few different hides which are all at different stages of completion. We'll cover scraping, cleaning, wringing, dressing, hand- and frame-softening, and smoking.
You should bring a water bottle, lunch and whatever snacks you might want for yourself; dress in clothes you won't mind getting dirty. If you can only come for one day you will still be able to learn a lot. Campsites are available for a small fee but not required.
Rewild Maine is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We depend on donations from the community to offer free classes and workshops and we are grateful for your support. Scholarships are available for paid classes on an as-needed basis and nobody will ever be turned away for lack of funds. All donations are tax-deductible.
